Lloyd Newson, Meryl Tankard, Marilyn Jones and Madame Zora Semberova are vying for lifetime achievement honours at the sixth annual Australian Dance Awards on Sunday at the Opera House.

The awards, presented by the City of Sydney and produced by Ausdance NSW in association with the Opera House, span ballet, music theatre and film. They aim to bolster recognition of dance practitioners and help foster a star system in the art form.

Established in 1997, the awards celebrate the talents and contributions of Australian artists working here and overseas.

More than 200 people and organisations throughout Australia were invited to nominate for this year’s awards and the winners have been chosen by a seven-member national selection committee.

In contest for outstanding performance by a male dancer are Stephen Heathcote for the Australian Ballet’s Totem, Byron Perry in Force Majeure’s Same, same But Different, Dean Walsh in The Age of Unbeauty (Australian Dance Theatre) and Dan Crestani in Virtually Richard 3rd (Expressions).

In the female category, the candidates are: Frances Rings in Bangarra’s Walkabout, Roz Hervey in Same, same But Different, Claudia Alessi in Point of Entry and Fiona Malone in The Age of Unbeauty (ADT).

Vying for outstanding performance by a dance troupe are the AB with Beyond 40, ADT for The Age of Unbeauty, Bangarra for Walkabout and Force Majeure for Same, same But Different, produced by Performing Lines.

Also in the spotlight are dance performances in stage musicals. It is a strongly contested field which doesn’t separate gender, so Todd McKenny (Singin’ in the Rain) goes toe to toe with Caroline O’Connor (Man of La Mancha), Sheree de Costa (Singin’ in the Rain) and Jesse Rasmussen (Hot Shoe Shuffle).

Kate Champion, Rings, Garry Stewart and Leigh Warren/William Forsyth are competing for outstanding achievement in choreography.

This year’s prize-giving ceremony, staged by Gregory Nash, will feature excerpts from Champion’s acclaimed Same, same But Different and the cast of the popular Hot Shoe Shuffle.
